Peachland School, the District’s second school, was built in 1960 to accommodate 490 students. Currently, the school has an enrollment of 555 students in Kindergarten through sixth grade and approximately 100 additional preschool students attending the State Preschool, two Special Education classes and the Occupational Therapy Clinic.
The Kindergarten through sixth grade staff includes two administrators, (forty percent assistant principal) twenty-six regular classroom teachers (two job shares), a Library/Media Technician, four office employees (Office Manager, Attendance Clerk, part-time Health Clerk, and part-time Office Assistant), eight part-time Curriculum Specialists, one full-time RSP teacher, one part-time Instructional Assistant, one part-time Speech therapist, a part-time APE teacher, three Special Circumstance Instructional Assistants (SCIA) aides (two students), two SIP assistants, three Bilingual Instructional Assistants, a part-time school psychologist, a part-time school counselor, a part-time English Learner Accountability Assistant (assisting with assessment and record-keeping), six playground supervisors, one day and one night custodian, and a cafeteria staff of three. Our Special Education Preschool, State Preschool and Occupational Therapy clinic serve the Newhall School District and include two part-time.psychologists, two speech teachers, two occupational therapists, four teachers and nine instructional assistants.
Special programs at Peachland include English Language Development, GATE, Resource Specialist Program, Speech and Language Program, Adaptive Physical Education, an Intervention Program for students at risk of retention, Extended Day reading and math tutorials, Homework Clubs, and the School Counseling program. Peachland School has been awarded the California Distinguished School Award in 1995, 2002 and 2006. In the spring of 2004, Peachland was honored as a California State Title I Achieving School.
The two predominant ethnic groups among Peachland’s student population are White and Hispanic. Most of the students live in the local school area, although approximately 149 students travel from the East Newhall area to attend Peachland. There is a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds among our students and families. Peachland’s staff and community share the belief that given high expectations and needed support, all students are capable of overcoming any disadvantages they face and reaching high levels of academic achievement. Our school continues to have a history of high student achievement as reflected in our API of 867 for 2008 STAR scores.
Peachland is proactive in involving parents in the educational process and developing strong parent/school partnerships. The school actively recruits parents from all segments of the community to volunteer in classrooms and to participate in groups such as the PTA, Site Council, Foundation, Reading Angels, GATE, English Language Learner’s Advisory Council and Title I Parent Advisory Committee.
